Another few weeks passed uneventfully, though by now Chance found himself always on edge, waiting. He watched Tucker as surreptitiously as he could, knowing Tucker's tendency for showing signs of stress in physical ways. Chance hoped that what he was watching for could be avoided.

Except Tucker came home from work one morning, white as a sheet, eyes standing out in stark relief against his pale face. "Bed," he managed to say as Chance rose from his chair at the kitchen table.

"What is it?" Chance asked, although he already knew.

"Tuck. Tell me."

"Head," Tucker answered, clearly able to manage only one-word responses, and then disappeared down the short hallway to the bedroom.

Chance sighed and muttered "damn", under his breath before following Tucker. Chance had known as soon as he'd seen him. Tucker suffered from migraines, and although they didn't occur often, they were harsh and debilitating when they did hit. They were stress-related headaches, and nothing was more frustrating to Chance than Tucker's refusal to see the doctor for an upgraded prescription. "He wants me to talk to 192

"I ain't gonna talk to no shrink about how to manage my stress. Got you for that, don't I?" Chance had finally let the subject drop when six months went by with no headache, but as he followed Tucker to the bedroom now, Chance realized he'd been waiting for Tucker to have one for days.

Tucker had managed to strip his shirt off and crawl beneath the covers, but the blinds remained open and the morning sunlight streamed through. Chance closed them quietly, immersing the room in semi-darkness, before sitting on the edge of the bed next to Tucker. "I'll get you ice,"

Chance whispered to him, stroking a hand down Tucker's bare back. "You want to try and take your meds?"

A barely-discernible nod came from under the covers, so Chance went and fetched a bag of ice wrapped in a towel, along with a bottle of water. He returned to the bedroom and urged Tucker to sit up and take his prescription medication, hoping it would stay down long enough to have some effect.

"Gonna puke it up," Tucker muttered, taking it anyway.

"Probably," Chance agreed, reaching out and dragging the small wastebasket closer to the bed. "Call me when you do."

"You'll hear it," Tucker answered, lying back down and shoving his head under a pillow.

Chance rested the small, ice-filled towel on the back of Tucker's neck, using his other hand to squeeze at the tense muscles. There was nothing else he could do for Tucker, and Chance tried to shove down the helpless, frustrated feeling he always got when he was unable to offer any kind of comfort.
